Mjolnir Class Destroyer

The Mjolnir-Class Destroyer is one of the newest designs fielded by the Terran Protectorate Stellar Navy. WIth the retirement of the aging Rama-class destroyers, the roles of Destroyer Escort (DE) and Destroyer (DD) needed to be filled by new vessels. Escort and fleet defense fell primarily to the Firestorm Escort Frigate. However, the navy still wanted a fast-attack vessel with singificant punch.
The Mjolnir-class is fast, maneuverable and heavily armed, with a focus on long cruises and vicious combat with more heavily armed vessels. Unlike the Firestorm, whose weapons are geared more defensively, the Mjolnir is designed to be a "giant killer." To achieve this goal, the ship has four powerful particle beam cannons, two 750-lbs. gauss cannons, 2 light anti-matter guns, and 24 anti-ship missile tubes. For point defense (and in case it does need to escort larger ships) the Mjolnir also has four turret-mounted heavy railguns. This is all packed into a no-nonsense 380-foot hull not much larger than an old WWII Fletcher-class destroyer. The ships have a complement of 165 crew and 15 officers.
Powerful engines and an oversized reactor give the ship speed and ensures its weapons can provide continuous fire. Thick armor allows the ship to survive a capital ship's weapons long enough to get within striking range (theoretically). However, the ship has few amenities, the most basic of sensors and very little utility outside of blowing other ships out of the stars. It's unclear what peacetime role they will be able to fill, but with the enemy marching unabated across Terran Protectorate space, that is of little concern. The Protectorate has at least a dozen shipyard facilities working full triple shifts manufacturing as many Mjolnirs as possible. The original plans were to have the naming convention be after mythical weapons. But due to the speed and number produced, most will not likely get official names, just production numbers.
