The Valiant-Class Modular Cruiser is a multipurpose starship designed for military and civilian use. Common variants among civilians include merchantman and surveyor configurations. The military uses them as communications ships, hospital ships, long-range reconnaissance and search and rescue. The ship is equipped with powerful sensors and communications suites and the central cargo area can be quickly converted into a field hospital, scientific laboratories, and command and control center as well. Its armaments are designed for primarily defensive use. They consist of two forward particle beam cannons, eight 5-inch rail gun turrets and two forward launch tubes. In civilian ships the particle beam cannons are replaced with much weaker lasers and the forward launch tubes are used to launch probes and deploy satellites or tow cables. Some have referred to the Valiant as a shuttle carrier, because it comes with eight Hopper shuttles which it can launch from four dorsal shuttle bays. The ships are extremely popular among corporations who want their vessels more heavily armed (it still far outguns most civilian vessels) and armored, but the York shipyards that built it have been converted to constructing and repairing ships of the line. That, along with its performance in the war, has boosted its resale value.
