The Liberte is an unofficial modification design for the Siena Ray armored transport that attempts to turn the ship from a defensive to offensive platform. Created by what became known as the Cooper Sector Partisans (CSP) during that sector's occupation by the Imperial Consortium, the Liberte was used to run blockades, perform commando combat drops and smuggle arms and supplies to human rebels trying to hold out while the Terran Protectorate pushed to liberate the sector.
The most obvious change was the removal of the original four wings/heat sinks and their replacement with more traditional wings which allowed for better atmospheric handling. The ships also had missile racks (anywhere from two to six depending on CSP supplies) that carried light anti-ship missiles and four 5-inch automatic rail guns under the bow. Called a "York Plow" by the crews, it lacked the punch of a true offensive weapon, but could unleash blistering fire that would make most opponents clear out of the Liberte's way. The missiles were its main weapon if an assault was in mind. It also still carried the standard "cheek" laser cannons and anti-starfighter defense turrets on the dorsal and ventral hull. The ships also had upgraded ECM packages and some carried a small fighter in their bellies when not transporting personnel, usually an old Arrow Interceptor.
The Imperial Consortium never found the production yards for these vessels because they were being made at shadowports by former pirating groups. It wasn't until some time after the war that it was revealed that pirates throughout the sector, long a pain for Cooper shipping, had joined the partisans and had given over their networks and smuggling and raiding tactics.
