Gettysburg Carrier Fleet

Description

A carrier fleet led by the Battlecarrier T.S.S. Gettysburg prepares to deploy from the recently terraformed world of Antonia in Leo Sector. The fleet's goal is to restore space dominance in beleaguered Cooper Sector, allowing fleets of Colonial Marines to safely move in and liberate captured worlds from the clutches of the Imperial Consortium.

Besides the Gettysburg, there is the fleet carrier Sovereign, two escort carriers and a large number of cruisers, frigates, destroyers and pinnaces operating as escorts.

Protectorate fleets deploy in a formation that includes three "rings" of ships, starting with high speed escort frigates and pinnaces running picket duty on the outskirts of the fleet for the outer ring. The defense ring consists of cruisers and destroyers and the fleet centers, also known as the anchors, are the big capital ships, including carriers, battleships and dreadnaughts. Transports and tenders also tend to be placed in the core as well, trailing the combat ships.
During standard maneuvers the fleet huddles together in relatively close range, causing their electromagnetic signatures and mass shadows to overlap, making it very difficult for an enemy's sensors to identify and get a count of individual ships without visual confirmation. The fleet spreads out just enough so that large area-of-effect ordinance, like antimatter missiles, can't catch more than one or two ships.
Only a few outriders, generally pinnaces, operate at extreme range from the fleet, sometimes as far out as an astronomical unit (the distance from the earth to the sun).

Enjoy, and let me know what you think.

Cool starships and planet!

Also, what does TSS stand for exactly?
