Resurrecting Fafnir, pt. 2

"Fafnir isn't the first Jotun ship we've found," the admiral enlightened me. "It's just the first one we've found in working condition."

"There are others?"

"Sure, but they're all burned out husks left floating over dead worlds," the admiral confided. "We found one nearly intact over a planet orbiting a red giant a few years back...well, the hull at least. Even that set R&D on armor ahead about 50 years. Remember that mandatory refit all the capital ships got?"

"Nothing like what you plan to get from Fafnir, obviously," I observed.

The admiral smiled back at me ferally, before turning back to the nebula. "Stars that died hundreds of millions of years ago. That's where we find them. Of course, nobody goes to those stars because they think there's nothing there but dead worlds. We now know better. We've got plans for Fafnir alright. Big plans."

"We just better hope Fafnir doesn't have its own plans," I said quietly, as the hulk of the ancient vessel filled our viewscreen...
