The truth is everyone hates escort duty. It's that tedium of trying to stay ever alert while tethered to slow-moving, high value targets, knowing that most of the time nothing will happen, but if it does your hands are tied from going on the offensive. Everyone hates it, but nobody who wants to eat or have enough ammo to fight fails to understand the need.
"See the stars" they said. "Make a stable income" they told me. They failed to mention the part where I'd be bored to tears for months at a time. Tossers won't even allow pets on board. Just wtf am I supposed to do for entertainment besides count bolts on the side of these slug freighters?
I generally hire lots of trigger happy boys from the mountains and swamps to operate my Escort Ships. Nothing like trigger happy Red Necks like me to keep some personal space between me and the pirates that think they are awesome stuff.
Hours of boredom, punctuated by brief bouts of stark terror
cool, whats the software?
GIMP 2.6 for the background and postwork, Doga-L3 and Carrara for the modeling, and Carrara for the rendering.
I feel safer whenever my ARG is being escorted by either a (USN/Friendly) Frigate or a Destroyer. It's always appreciated by us guys whose ship aren't meant for direct combat.
May not be the most glamorous job in the world, at times, but if it pays the bills...
As a veteran of many FPS games (and a few space combat sims) with escort missions, yeah they suck. Basically you'll want huge gobs of long-range accurate fire, craploads of high-damage short-range firepower, and fighter cover or squadmates in that order as the enemy closes with the target. Don't forget missiles and grenades!
I used to be a huge space sim fan, with the Wing Commander and X-Wing series being some of my favorites. Escort missions always sucked. And you're right, you want huge amounts of long-range accurate fire so you can pick off incoming enemies while babysitting your charges.
